Short answer
Most SEO services for ecommerce are sold as content and links, but the decisive work is technical: stopping filter URLs from consuming crawl capacity, making product pages eligible for merchant listings, and ensuring the page a crawler receives actually contains the product.
Key takeaways
- 01Google's preferred fix for faceted navigation is to prevent crawling, not to optimise it.
- 02Merchant listings require name, image and an offer with price and ISO 4217 currency.
- 03Only pages where a shopper can actually buy are eligible for merchant listing results.
- 04Google renders JavaScript in a queued phase after crawling — not during it.
The visible work is the smallest work
An ecommerce SEO proposal usually arrives as a content calendar, a link-building retainer and a keyword map. None of that is wrong. It is just the part that matters least on a site with thousands of URLs, most of which the search engine will never look at closely enough to judge.
A catalogue site has a structural problem a brochure site does not: it generates URLs faster than anyone can review them. Fix that first and the content plan works. Skip it and the content plan is competing with your own filter pages.
Product markup has hard requirements
Merchant listing experiences are not decorative. To be eligible, `Product` markup must carry a name, an image and an offers block, and that offer needs a price plus a priceCurrency in three-letter ISO 4217 format. Google recommends multiple high-resolution images — a minimum of 50,000 pixels when width is multiplied by height — in 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1.
Beyond the minimum, `availability`, `aggregateRating`, `shippingDetails` and `hasMerchantReturnPolicy` are the recommended fields worth the effort, because they are the ones that make a result look answerable at a glance.

Check what the crawler actually receives
Google handles JavaScript in three phases — crawl, render, index — and rendering sits in a queue that pages "may stay on for a few seconds, but it can take longer than that." On a catalogue with thousands of products, a delay per page is a structural cost rather than an inconvenience.
If your price, availability or product description is injected client-side, the first version Google sees may have none of it. The test takes ten seconds: open view-source, not the inspector, and search for the price.
What to ask an agency before signing
- How will you stop filter URLs consuming crawl capacity — and will you use robots.txt or canonicals?
- Which product pages currently fail merchant listing eligibility, and why?
- Does our product content appear in view-source, or only after JavaScript runs?
- What share of crawled URLs are actually products rather than filter combinations?
- What will you report monthly that is not a rankings screenshot?
An agency that answers those five specifically is doing ecommerce SEO. One that answers with a content calendar is selling something else. See how we handle e-commerce builds, or get in touch at contact.
Frequently asked questions
Technical fixes show up faster than content does, because they change how much of your catalogue gets crawled and indexed rather than adding new pages to compete with. Expect crawl behaviour to shift within weeks and rankings to follow over months.
Sometimes — a filter that matches genuine demand, like a colour or a brand people actually search for, can earn its own page. The mistake is indexing all of them by default. Choose the handful with real search volume and block the rest.
Google encourages both. Structured data describes what is on the page itself, which keeps Search consistent with the feed and covers products or variants the feed may not include. They serve different systems and are not redundant.
Google recommends multiple high-resolution images with a minimum of 50,000 pixels when multiplying width by height, supplied in 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1 aspect ratios. A single small thumbnail meets the letter of the requirement but not the intent.
The manufacturer description repeated across retailers is a weak page, not a penalty. The more damaging duplication is internal — near-identical filter URLs competing with each other and with the category page they came from.
